Middle East oil producers are testing new chemical solutions that aim to improve production efficiency while reducing environmental impact, as the industry seeks cost-effective methods to extend field life.

Scientists have developed a range of oilfield chemicals using lignosulfonates, a byproduct of the paper industry, to tackle long-standing operational issues. Early laboratory tests and pilot trials suggest these products can simultaneously reduce toxic hydrogen sulfide and prevent mineral scaling inside pipelines, two key contributors to maintenance costs and safety risks.

While commercial use remains in the early stages, several national oil companies in the Gulf have begun evaluating the chemicals as part of wider initiatives to modernise field operations. Companies are targeting lower chemical volumes, simpler treatment strategies and improved environmental performance in line with evolving industry standards.

Alongside these developments, research into advanced anti-corrosion agents is showing encouraging results. Early-stage testing has demonstrated improved resistance to corrosion under high-flow conditions typical of Gulf oilfields, addressing one of the sector’s most expensive operational challenges.

Regional innovation centres are supporting these efforts. Clariant’s technical hub in Dubai, opened in 2022, continues to facilitate laboratory research and pilot programmes across the region. The company is working alongside local producers to accelerate the adoption of these emerging chemical technologies.

“Producers are prioritising smarter chemical solutions that cut costs without compromising safety or sustainability,” said a senior industry analyst.

As testing progresses, industry observers expect these multi-functional chemicals to contribute to more adaptive and efficient oilfield practices, with the potential to extend asset lifespans while reducing emissions.
